No Home Services Experience? Here's Why That's Not a Dealbreaker

There's a common misconception in the home service industry that you need hands-on experience in a trade to open a business doing that kind of work. At Fresh Coat Painters, that just isn't true, and Todd Campbell is proof.

But it didn’t start because Campbell was thinking about being a painter. In fact, in his initial conversation he told the representative from Fresh Coat he wasn’t even interested, but he listened to the pitch anyway because he had a few minutes to spare on his way to lunch. What caught his attention had nothing to do with painting: strong profit margins, no need for a physical office, control over his own schedule, and a lower upfront capital requirement than a lot of other concepts he had considered. Before Fresh Coat, Campbell worked in medical software. Home services was unfamiliar territory and it made him a little nervous.

But what sealed the decision wasn't a spreadsheet. It was how he was treated.

"They treated me like a person, not just someone who was going to pay a franchise fee," Campbell said, and that included the promise of a business coach and hands-on help getting the marketing and launch off the ground.

That support isn't just talk. Fresh Coat's training and onboarding program is built to get owners fully prepared before day one. Some industry knowledge gets covered along the way, but the real focus for owners is team building, leadership, and business development, not climbing a ladder or working with a paintbrush. On top of that, the Fresh Coat network is full of owners who actively share advice and best practices with each other, which means new owners benefit from the system's collective experience from day one, regardless of their background.

Campbell doesn't sugarcoat the leap.

"It's definitely scary to think about investing your money and doing something different," he said, "but do it for your family. Do it for your health. Do it because it's going to make you a better person."

For him, ownership has meant freedom, self-improvement, and running things the way he thinks they should be run. If painting experience has been the thing holding you back, Todd's story is a good reminder that it was never the qualification that mattered.
